Can the Center Hold? The Southern Baptist Convention in the 21st Century

O’Sullivan’s law generally says that institutions drift to the ideological left without deliberate effort against this. History has shown this to be true of denominations in general, and time will tell if it will be true of the Southern Baptist Convention in particular. There is much to celebrate in the SBC, from the Cooperative Program, to missions, to church planting, to the Conservative Resurgence. But drift is real, and the “big tent” of the SBC threatens to collapse under the influence of rising numbers of female preachers, lack of fiscal accountability, and a disconnect between SBC leaders and laypeople. Can the center hold? Join us in this month as we ponder this question for the SBC and beyond.
