We used to live in a beautiful small village in the heart of the Peak District in Derbyshire, England. My wife and I would take our carousel of children daily on all sorts of walks up and down the hills and over streams. At some point we began to notice little violet flowers that began appearing each summer around a brook surrounded by greenery. At first, it was a pleasant surprise. There seemed to be plenty of them around, so we let the children pick them and play with them. They loved to press down on the pods which would send the seeds flying out. We soon realised—pretty as these new flowers may be—that they were known as Himalayan Balsam, one of the most invasive plant species that exist. The nature of those ballistic seed pods sends seven or eight hundred seeds up to seven meters away. Due to the aggressive and monopolising nature of Himalayan Balsam, the native species are soon choked out and disappear from the region altogether—if nothing is done about it.
This comes to mind when I think about a new term that has come to prominence in recent years: “soft Jihad.” Much like the phrase “soft totalitarianism[1]”—popularised by Rod Dreher in Live Not by Lies to describe the slow but powerful impact of cultural Marxism upon Western culture—“soft Jihad” describes the way the hearts and minds of modern Western people are made apathetic to, and eventually won over to, the inevitability of their own cultural defeat at the hands of Islam.
Like all ideological infiltration of this kind, the key to its success is for those being “softly” conquered to tell themselves (1) that what is happening is not happening at all; then, (2) that what is happening was inevitable anyway, and finally, (3) that what happened was a good thing all along. In this article, I want to show some of the reasons why Islam has infiltrated Great Britain and beyond, expose Islam’s nature of political and cultural conquest, and call Christians to stand up against it.
Immigrants and Samaritans
In my own homeland of Great Britain, mass immigration is justified by the relatively recent idea of “multiculturalism,” the idea that a diversity of foreign nationalities enriches a particular national culture far and wide.[2] It is described by its ardent defenders almost like a magic spell, a liberating force for tolerance and inclusivity. We are told we must keep believing this even when it becomes very clear that it fundamentally erodes vital aspects of that very national culture, leading to the loss of liberties and freedom of speech as a direct consequence.[3] Those who say otherwise tend to be shamed as lacking in education or empathy, leading more and more people to refuse to allow themselves to think or say otherwise.
Migrant Islam has been increasing in Western Europe for decades, some of it more subtle than others. Today, boatloads of fighting-age Muslim men are still arriving on British shores day after day, week after week, year after year, posing as refugees or asylum seekers.[4] They were not invited, and yet rather than being refused entry, arrested, or deported, they are instead welcomed with open arms, put up in free hotels, given free meals, even free phones.[5] If it all sounds a little mad, that’s because it is.
It could be said that the European immigration crisis has essentially been made possible by a mutation in the logic of the Good Samaritan. That’s why even many Christians find it hard to say much against the immigration problem,[6] because secular globalists—in repugnance of the historic “Ordo Amoris” regarding the primary duty to care for one’s own family and people in the first instance[7]—have trained them to think that “welcoming the stranger” applies at a political, national level, even when it may threaten the safety of one’s own people. Those who oppose Islamic immigration too strongly are aggressively attacked and smeared for being “bad Samaritans.” Some are subjected to intensive lawfare in the hope of being driven to silence, while others may even be imprisoned for years for a single social media post in a moment of frustration.[8]
Few globalists have considered that these “bad Samaritans” actually resemble the dying man lying on the ground, rather than the bandits who put him there. In a roundabout way, the liberal tolerance agenda that led to the multicultural ideology that permeates British institutions today displays more of a tolerance for the bandits than the actual victims of injustice. No case demonstrates this more prominently than that of the Englishman, Henry Nowak, an eighteen-year-old student who was stabbed by a Sikh man while on his way home from a night out, only for the man and his family to call the police and claim that Nowak had racially abused them. Due to the freighted “anti-racism” priorities of the British police, when the officers arrived on the scene they immediately favoured the Sikhs’ testimony while denying urgent medical care to Nowak, whose quiet pleas of “I’ve been stabbed” and “I can’t breathe” were initially not believed, ultimately allowing him to bleed to death in front of them. So entrenched is multicultural ideology that a spurious accusation of “racism” may even hold the power over life or death.
The Reality Before Our Eyes
It’s true that the native-born population of Britain—like those in the US—are hardly immune to perpetrating many social ills, and especially as they move away from the moorings of Christianity in their lives. That’s why we must continue to remind patriots to return to Christ, rather than simply bemoaning the death of the culture which countless faithful Christians helped to build.
Many Britons are only just waking up, recognizing the steep price to be paid for abandoning the Christian faith in this land. A video circulated in 2025 of a Muslim man gloating over the latest Islamic takeover of an old church building in Sheffield, England. I’ve driven past that building several times before. As he walked alongside it, videoing its architectural features, he narrated gleefully: “Christianity is depleting, atheism is unfulfilling, Islam is here, and it’s here to stay . . . So, carry on making those churches for us, keep them empty, we’ll buy them in a few years’ time and make them into a mosque.”[9] Slowly, the Himalayan Balsam grows, and the native plants are choked.
It’s helpful when Muslims are honest and consistent about Islamic expansion. I expect there are far more Muslims who think what that man says, but just don’t say it out loud. He’s partially correct, too. Atheism is unfulfilling, and many churches are declining for good reason because they stopped believing their own historic beliefs and capitulated to the secular apathy all around them.[10]
Even so, you would have to have been hiding under a multicultural rock in the Arabian desert to not have noticed the social problems that have arisen in Britain in correlation with the unprecedented levels of Islamic immigration in recent years. To take the most obvious and most harrowing example, there has been a discernible increase in police-recorded rape offences in the UK, which went from around 8,000 a year in the early 2000s to a staggering 74,000 per year today.[11] Astonishingly, this is an almost 1000% increase, with the very highest spikes all coming from 2021–2025, a time during which Britain has also experienced record numbers of mass immigration by people of Muslim background.[12]
“That’s just a coincidence,” says the oblivious multicultural liberal. Really? And I suppose the Pakistani Muslim rape gangs scandal[13] in multiple towns and cities across England was also just a coincidence, as was the fact that the local Muslim communities who knew about it said nothing in order to protect the perpetrators? And what about the fact that the details of those grooming gangs were covered up by police authorities for years, in fear their exposure might incite a “race war”?[14] And was it also a coincidence that some Imams in Britain teach that underage white girls are “fair game” for abuse because they “deserve it”?[15]
Reports of Muslim rape gangs are not isolated incidents. An independent report compiled by the survivor-led Rape Gang Inquiry estimates that at least 250,000 girls have been exploited by Muslim rape gangs over the last few decades and has documented evidence of grooming-gang activity in at least 149 local authority areas—nearly forty percent of the United Kingdom.[16] These gangs were religiously motivated to carry out these rapes under the theological teaching of al-walā’ wa-l-barā’, which demands subjugation of the infidel, including sex slavery as a form of subjugation.[17]
The cold reality is that these things are not coincidences. They don’t happen by accident. They happen as a result of our toleration and placation of wicked ideology, hiding beneath a respectable veneer. We told ourselves that wildly oppositional cultural backgrounds and values could be allowed to take root with no adverse effects for the existing culture. In what transpired, we were trained to shame the exposers of deviancy, rather than the deviants themselves.
Islamic Socio-Political Influence
For many people, however, those aforementioned “problems” are easily written off as aberrations among minority sections of the Muslim community. They look away from such things and hope they’re just blips that can be sorted out. But the facts and trajectories do not lie. Despite the fact that Islam promotes an ideology totally incompatible with Western liberal values, let alone Christian values, it is being permitted to grow in pervasive influence throughout formerly Christian nations. If not stopped, its growing political influence will radically transform what nations like Britain are at the root and branch level. In many respects, this process has already begun.
It is known that Muslim communities tend to engage in bloc voting, meaning they have been able to gain significant influence in numerous parties, even those which are purportedly “on the Right,” such as the Conservative Party or Reform UK. There are currently around four million Muslims (out of around 66 million people in Britain) according to the Muslim Council of Britain and the 2021 UK census.[18] Yet the mayors of many of England’s major towns and cities (including London, Newham, and Tower Hamlets) are Muslims; there are nearly 2000 mosques,[19] over 80 sharia courts and over 50 Sharia Councils,[20] and for many years now, parents have come to expect that their children will face lessons on Islam as if it was a mandatory requirement.[21]
A viral video showed a young Scottish boy-scout on a field trip to a mosque, who stood standing while all his peers bowed to pray to Allah as instructed.[22] The moment exemplified not just that boy’s personal courage but the now-normal and expected reality that Islamic prayers will be pushed upon schoolchildren, with the excuse that it’s “for purely educational purposes” or “just to give them more awareness of religious diversity.”
Islam’s extensive influence relative to its explosive population growth will soon make an irreversible impact upon the future of the nation and its historic Christian identity.[23] If Islam did become the normative religion and cultural force in Britain at every level of society, we would only have ourselves to blame if we refused to speak out against what was happening while we still had the chance. It’s not uncommon to see huge billboards over the busiest roads in English cities, saying “TRUST ALLAH”. It really hits you when you see things like that in front of your eyes. It feels like you are being slowly conquered, and there’s nothing you can do about it.
This is not simply about the loss of Britain as a culture, but the loss of Britain as a Christian culture, the soil of which was long sown with the seeds of the Gospel, overflowing with abundant fruit, and which sent Gospel missionaries to the ends of the earth, only to watch that cultural inheritance seem to be irreversibly eroded over the course of little more than half a century by an invasive ideology.[24]
Between Shame and Delusion
Right now, most middle-class Christians in Britain are probably caught between emotions by what’s happening around them. They hear about new Islamic “conquests” like this each year, every time an Islamic festival is touted by the cultural elites, so that it eventually comes to be seen as normal, as part of the cultural furniture.
Most people, if they’re honest, don’t want Islam to become the normative religion and culture within the nation. But they also know they can’t say so out loud because they don’t want to be called names like “Islamophobe” or to be frowned upon by their more inclusive colleagues at work. And so, they choose the cowardly option of saying and doing nothing, hoping it won’t go in the direction it obviously seems to be going.
The more repetitive this scenario becomes for Christians, the more softened they become to the invasive threat of cultural takeover generation by generation, and in turn, the more hardened they become against other Christians who actively stand against Islam. And so, they go into self-delude mode. It’s all they can do to overcome the dilemma.
“Stop exaggerating,” they say. “It’s not a takeover. It’s just being open to appreciating different cultures. You need to open your mind! What are you, a racist?” It’s hard for the otherwise polite Christian to respond any other way because of how comprehensively they’ve been conditioned by the modern norms of secular liberal globalism without realising it. Indeed, how can we expect them to respond otherwise when for most of their life they’ve likely been told something to the effect of:
- “All your cultural forefathers were basically evil.”
- “Caring about preserving national identity is Far Right.”
- “Opposing the spread of Islam is unkind.”
- “‘Christian Britain’ was a myth, anyway.”
- “Jesus wants you to be nice and welcoming to all people at all times.”
This is why the “educated” of our time submit themselves to wilful ignorance. This is also why, despite that small part of them that knows that the spread of Islam isn’t going to be “good news” for this nation in the long run, they continue to say nothing, and to think nothing of what it will mean for their grandchildren (if they’re lucky enough to get any). Such is the wilful thoughtlessness of the conquered. It can and should be otherwise.
The success of “soft Jihad” and the gradual normalisation of Islamic cultural conquest in formerly Christian nations is enabled by the Christians who refuse to stand up to it. We have become accustomed in our time to opposing things which we ought to have defended and welcoming things which we ought to have opposed. When the ideology we welcomed eventually turns on us and undermines our way of life, we should not be surprised. This is what we allowed to happen. We did it because we wanted people to know we were “nice.” We told ourselves those colourful Balsam flowers complemented the countryside, even when we saw the obvious effects. We might be known instead as fools who didn’t know what we were letting ourselves in for.
The Religion of Peace?
Islam is on a mission, whether or not all Western Muslims even know it yet. A much-shared video occasionally makes the rounds showing clips from a variety of public speeches made by Muslims in America over the last few decades.
Here are some choice quotes:
“Why am I in America? Why am I migrating here…? We are in this country purely for the sake of Allah…”
“As we are here living in the US, what is our role…? Do not obey the disbelievers; don’t yield to them… Make Jihad against them!”
“It is our physical Jihad duty to fight the entire earth until we enter into the Ummah [i.e. the totality of Muslim unity]…”
“For us Muslims living in the west our Jihad is to establish the Deen [i.e. the creed] of Allah through all means necessary.”[25]
Naturally, liberal supporters of Islam will say that all these voices are “unrepresentative.” Perhaps they are. But of what are they unrepresentative…? Of Islam? Or of the average “modern” Muslim living in the West today? The difference makes all the difference.
For too long, Westerners have written off Islamic “extremists” as if they are uncharacteristic of “true Islam.” We are told rather that Islam must be described as “the religion of peace.”
I don’t know exactly when we all began to accept this terminology as the norm, but clearly we did. Perhaps we have all met a sufficient number of peaceful Muslims and reasoned that the label fits the average Muslim one might meet in an average everyday setting in places like Britain, the US, or Canada.
But a “religion of peace” is quite obviously not how Islam presented itself throughout most of history since its inception in the seventh century. Islam would and could not have expanded across the Middle East and North Africa, for example, calling itself a “religion of peace.” The phrase, “religion of peace,” is yet another product of the secular twentieth century. Although there are certainly significant gestures of peace in the Quran, according to one source, the phrase itself was apparently coined in the 1930s and repeated en masse within the 1970s to assuage European fears over increasing Muslim migration to Western cultures during that time.[26]
It seems the phrase “worked” not only upon Europeans, but also on many of the Muslim migrants in the West, many of whom came to understand their own religion in very different terms to that of its historical and ideological roots. This is why it’s actually the modern, westernised Muslims who are not characteristic of true Islam. And yet, because they are still Muslims—and because Islam has such strong ties to cultural and ethnic particularity—even unwittingly “peaceful” Muslims are still representative of the advance of Islamic civilization over and against Western Christendom.
The Doctrine of Islamic Conquest
Regardless of how few Western Muslims believe it or admit it, true Islam is inevitably and inescapably committed to cultural conquest at the root and branch level, whether they know it or not, and whether they like it or not. The much-cited Sura 8:39, for example, clearly gestures towards the conquest of unbelievers with the end-goal of religious and cultural domination: “Make war on them until idolatry shall cease and [Allah’s] religion reigns supreme.”
Muslims tend to complain that verses like Sura 8:39 are misunderstood, that we can only really understand them in the original Arabic. But looking at multiple versions of the translation still gives the same essential meaning for an inevitable trajectory of domination. For example: “And fight them until there is no fitnah [”mischief” / opposition] and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah.” Remember that what is assumed by “religion” here is not just “a personal belief” (the way liberal westerners tend to see religion) but the conflation of belief and culture. It is not the harmless, neutered understanding of religion beloved by secularism;[27] it is a totalising force which re-founds the culture at a fundamental level. So, when it says “until all of it is for Allah,” it means not just the religion of Muslims but the religion of all people.
There are indeed many liberalised Western Muslims out there who do not understand the logical implications of their own religion. They seem to believe that their religious way of life can continue on its current trajectory of growth in the West without eventually overriding the current “host culture,” which supports it—the one that happens to have been constructed on Christian foundations.[28] In reality, it is impossible to speak of the Islamic religion without speaking about culture. This is actually true of most religions, including Christianity.[29]
In Islam, however, this is especially pointed because there is a particular kind of culture—founded on Sharia Law—that must be instituted for Islam to be truly “practiced.” All it takes is for enough Muslims to realise that much of what we call “Islamism” is not a niche aberration of true Islamic principles but a more consistent interpretation of them. Millions of currently-peaceful half-westernised Muslims provide a wide recruitment pool for Islamic groups intent on “awakening” them to the more radical—that is, more consistent—expressions of Islam in culture.
Whether Sura 8:39 speaks of fighting unbelievers “until their obedience be wholly unto Allah,” or fighting them until “the entire system is for [Allah],” or fighting them until “there exists…faith in Allah altogether and everywhere,” the meaning is clear: total religious conquest; and thus, total cultural conquest. The native foliage must be subjugated; the Balsam must have no competitor.
As Raymond Ibrahim—author of several historical works on Christendom and Islam—said of the situation in the West today:
In all of world history there has never been a civilization that has so opened its doors to another civilization that is openly hostile to it . . . Your European ancestors fought tooth and nail to prevent Islam from entering and conquering Europe . . . Now Western Europe is saying, ‘oh none of that matters now, come on in.’[30]
The Western education system, soaked in postcolonial and post-Christian guilt and the “the dark spell over the West” over the “horrors” of the crusades, has bred a generation of political Sarumans and Denethors who are either so entranced by temporary power and status that they joined the enemy, or too apathetic to do anything other than pursue an insular life hoping things don’t get worse, until they inevitably do.
Why Christians Must Stand Up
Such a reality should be concerning to any person who cares about the future of their national culture. But because historic Christianity is bound up with the national culture in places like Britain and the US, contemporary Christians ought to be taking an especially prominent lead in doing something about it.
While many Britons feel a deep passion for their national heritage and a sense that it is inseparably “Christian” in some way, it is the Christians themselves who ought to have the clearest insight into what those Christian foundations truly mean and be ready to stand up and defend them. As noted, however, many Christians have been cowed into passivity by their own multicultural naïveté, believing themselves to be “witnessing” to Islam when in fact, they end up inadvertently normalising it.
A video was posted in 2025 showing a card-carrying “conservative” evangelical church in the US extolling the virtues of Ramadan.[31] In this video, the chirpy evangelical leader did not say Islam was “true” as such but was lauding and even recommending Christians to “enter into” the practice of Ramadan, speaking of how good it is that this special time helps Muslims to “reinvigorate their relationship with God.” He said that, rather than opposing Ramadan, Christians can and should “join in” with the prayers and fasting of these Muslims, recognising their positive value, in the hope that such prayers might lead these Muslims to an encounter with Christ.
Most of the modern winsome evangelical churches right now would still probably gasp at this. They will think how unthinkable it is that an evangelical church could say such things. But given enough time, don’t be surprised if they start to say similar things one day too. This is precisely where the welcome-happy shallowness of much modern winsome evangelicalism leads: literally proclaiming the “good news” of Islam with the same fervour with which they ought to be proclaiming Christ.
Spend a couple of decades short-cutting the Bible and exclusively emphasizing the “niceness” and “hospitality” of Christ, and such attitudes become almost inevitable. I’ve seen it happen to many people, churches, and institutions over the years with regard to so many other anti-Christian ideologies. They once were sound; now are lost. They gradually drifted downstream with the world. Many did so, ironically, whilst claiming to be more concerned with “Christ” than “the culture,” not realising that the subtle ideologies which they refused to stand against would one day come to chip away at their foundational belief in Christ too, often without them even realising.
Christ mercifully forgave Peter his moment of cowardice when Peter said, “I do not know him.” But there is a worse cowardice even than that. Remember, He says to the Laodiceans: “because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth” (Rev. 3:16). He wants nothing to do with the kind of limp faith that cheerily tells people they stand for Christ yet refuses to actually stand up when it counts. We must not sell out to the world by offering them a superficial, cut-price Christ. He is king of kings and Lord of Lords with “all things” under his feet (Eph. 1:22). This is why He is not apathetic to what happens in culture. It’s part of His domain, and He calls upon His faithful followers to stand up and defend a culture with Christian ideals. Doing this allows us to continue the Great Commission in calling all nations “to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matt. 28:20) for the good of the nations and the glory of Christ.
Standing for Christ means not only standing up for all He stands for but also all He stands against. If we were to build our house on the rock rather than the sand (Matt. 7:24-27) then we must reject the religious ideologies (including secular multiculturalism) which seek to undermine that Rock, even when they claim to do so in Jesus’s name. Christians should love their enemies. They can sometimes do so by opposing them, exposing them, and alerting everyone to the invasive plant that, given enough time and passive encouragement, will take over the entire ecosystem. There is much more that could be said about how Christians might do this.[32] But above all they must start to understand what it truly means for Christ to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and King of Kings and Lord of Lords. If we really want to resist Islamization, we must know what it means to really believe such things, to grasp the implications of who Christ is for all our lives, for all nations, and to speak and live like it, regardless of whatever names we may be called for doing so.
